AFCON is a major football tournament set in Africa, considered the continent’s toughest international competition. This year, AFCON was mired in controversy, as the host nation Morocco faced accusations of favoritism and corruption throughout their run to the finals. Allegations of misconduct continued during the finals, with the other team in the final Senegal marching off the pitch in protest against what they perceived as unfair refereeing. After a period of internal talks, the Senegalese team was convinced to resume the game by their goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy, eventually winning in overtime. Recently, months after this game was played, the Confédération Africaine de Football (“CAF”) Appeal Board overturned the results of the match, turning the result into a 3-0 victory for Morocco, ruling that leaving the field counts as an automatic forfeit.
Morocco is set to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, with Spain and Portugal.
